What are Bully Sticks?

If you are new to bully sticks, you might be wondering what in the world a bully stick is. It's a very common question. I would want to know what I was feeding my dog and where it was coming from.

Bully Sticks are a single ingredient chew, no long complicated ingredient list.

If you were to look at the anatomy of cattle, you won't find bully stick on there. You will see things like patella, heart, ear, and trachea, which are all make great dog chews as well.

Bully sticks are also known as beef pizzle.

What is Beef Pizzle?

Ok..so what is beef pizzle? Beef pizzle is bull/steer penis. Pizzle is an all natural muscle meat similar to tendons and jerkies.

Your first thought, like many, is probably "Ew, why would I ever feed that to my dog?"

However, while it might sound gross to us, dogs love it. They have a strong flavor and taste.

Since pizzle is a muscle not a bone, it is fully digestible and offers many wonderful benefits.

Sustainable Dog Chews

Bully sticks are not only good for your dog, but helpful for the planet and farmers.

Did you know that beef requires more land, fertilizer, and water compared to other food sources? This adds to the greenhouse gas emissions. To make it worthwhile, we want to be able to use all parts of the animal.

At Jack's, we work with local Texas slaughters to take what might be thrown away and put it to use. Outside of the pet industry, most parts of the cow, besides the meat, are thrown out and considered the offal. While most people shy away from offal, it actually offers many nutritional benefits. This does not mean that these parts are inedible to humans; they are actually considered a delicacy in some cultures.

Benefits of Bully Sticks

  • 100% Digestible- Bully sticks are 100% beef muscle. There are no added ingredients. Bully sticks are a highly palatable and tough chew. You can feel good knowing you are giving your dog a treat that they will not only love the taste of, but that will not upset their stomach or send you to the vet. Even you could digest it.
  • Dental Chew- Dental health is extremely important to your dog's overall health. Chewing can help maintain the buildup of plaque and healthy gums. The mechanical actions of chewing on treats promotes dental hygiene by scraping the gums and teeth. This scraping keeps their teeth whiter and free of build up.
  • High Protein- Dogs love meat; they are opportunistic carnivores. They need protein to survive along with other nutrients. Bully sticks contain a high protein concentration, but are also low in fat. Beef is rich in amino acids which supports healthy muscles, brain, skin, and coat.

How Are Bully Sticks Made?

Bully sticks are made from bull penis. After the cow has been slaughtered, the raw meat is sent off to different places to be used. The muscle is then cleaned, stretched, and either sun dried, baked, or smoked.

At Jacks, we smoke our bully sticks in small batches. After they have been smoked, we dehydrate them to finish the cooking process and naturally preserve them. Smoking gives the bully sticks a natural BBQ flavor.
